Introduction
To import goods into Canada, you must comply with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) requirements. Here’s a concise guide to help you prepare.
The setup process with the Canada Border Services Agency typically takes a minimum of 4 weeks. Delays in completing this step will directly impact your ability to import goods into Canada and will push back the start of your order fulfillment. To avoid disruptions to your onboarding timeline, we strongly recommend initiating this process as soon as possible.
What You Need to Import into Canada
1. Register for a Business Number (BN):
If your business doesn’t have a BN, contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to obtain one.

2. Register with CARM:
Email CARM_RM_Support-Soutien_RM_GCRA@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca with your BN to request a BSF947 form to complete and submit.
- The form must be signed by an owner, Corporate Director (as registered with the CRA), or a licensed customs broker.
- If someone else signs, provide proof of authorization.
Do You Need a Customs Broker?
While it’s not mandatory to hire a customs broker, it is highly recommended to ensure a smooth import process. A broker can help navigate customs regulations, duties, and taxes.
